NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man who tried to rob an apartment while dressed as a sheriff’s officer has been sentenced to nearly seven years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say Clemente Carlos must also serve three years of supervised release under the sentence imposed Tuesday. The 30-year-old Newark man had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery.

Prosecutors say Carlos and another man wanted to rob a Paterson home in August 2015 because they believed the resident kept cash proceeds there from his business. They were dressed as Passaic County sheriff’s officers when they confronted a woman and her baby outside the home.

Authorities say the men led her back into an apartment there, where they pointed a gun at her brother and bound him, looking for money. Police say they left after not finding cash.
