CHICAGO (AP) - An autopsy report shows a Lake County Jail inmate found unresponsive in his cell last year died of a massive abdominal infection.

The Chicago Tribune (https://trib.in/2q7m9xz ) reports that the March 2016 autopsy found bleeding inside the intestines of 36-year-old David Butterfield along with the infection.

No evidence of injuries that contributed to his death was found.

The official cause of death was listed as peritonitis. It is usually caused by infection and requires prompt medical treatment.

Butterfield was arrested Feb. 29, 2016 for failing to appear in court on controlled substance possession charges. He was taken a few days later to a Waukegan hospital after officers monitoring him on suicide watch found him unresponsive.

Butterfield was among six Lake County Jail inmates to die in custody in recent years.
