OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - A middle school principal in east Alabama has been named the 2017-2018 Alabama Middle School Principal of the Year.

Keith York was honored with the award by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals, the Opelika-Auburn News (https://bit.ly/2qyaYSb) reported. He will be recognized at the awards luncheon during the CLAS Convention on June 13 at the Mobile Convention Center.

“I am very humbled to receive the award,” York said. “Any recognition of me is the recognition of our teachers and staff at Opelika Middle School. We all work hard together to provide a great educational experience.”

The Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools says York will also be honored at the AASSP/AAMSP Fall Conference in November.

York has more than 25 years of experience in the education field. He’s been the principal at Opelika Middle School since 2011.

York also helped implement the Be Nice Initiative at the middle school to develop positive character and behavior among students. All staff members are assigned to small groups of students and use this time to discuss positive character, build rapport and guide students’ academic needs.

“Congratulations to Keith York on his selection as Alabama’s Middle School Principal of the Year,” said L. Earl Franks, CAE, AASSP executive director. “His accomplishments as a school principal are well documented and worthy of this state-wide recognition. His tireless and highly successful efforts on behalf of the students he serves have not gone unnoticed. We are excited to have Mr. York as Alabama Middle School Principal of the Year.”
