GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) - A woman and her 9-year-old son suffered life-threatening injuries Monday in a shooting at an Oregon apartment complex, police said.

Gresham police were looking for at least one person who they believe fired shots after breaking into the apartment. Investigators don’t believe it was a random attack.

Police have not said if the shooting was gang related, but the East Metro Gang Task Force has joined the investigation.

Gresham Police Detective Adam Baker told KATU the 29-year-old woman was shot several times.

One of the boy’s grandmothers told KOIN that a baby girl inside the apartment was not hurt.

The boy’s other grandmother, Lynette Bryant, expressed disbelief about the violence.

“Who wants to assassinate a 9-year-old kid, who has a bright future? That’s heartbreaking,” she told KOIN. “He’s a beautiful kid; he’s an honor roll student.”

Witnesses said they heard several shots.
