DENVER (AP) - A Denver police officer who was shot in the leg by a suicidal man during a disturbance is expected to recover.

The Denver Post reports https://goo.gl/06HxK8 rookie officer John Allred is recovering from a broken femur after Saturday’s shootout with 23-year-old Brandon Gerwing. Police were trying to calm Gerwing and take him into custody when he shot Allred.

Another officer returned fire, hitting Gerwing multiple times. Gerwing, who remains in critical condition, will be held for investigation of attempted first-degree murder and assaulting a police officer.

Police are reviewing footage from officers’ body and car-mounted cameras.
