SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia Department of Transportation says a tractor-trailer hauling a corrosive material has crashed, closing northbound lanes of the West Virginia Turnpike.

Media report the crash happened about 3 a.m. and the truck began leaking battery acid.

The department says a detour has been set up that calls for traffic to get off the turnpike at Exit 48 and follow U.S. 19 to Interstate 79, where vehicles can get back onto the highway.

The department says oversize loads aren’t permitted to use the detour due restrictions on the New River Gorge Bridge.

Media report the truck driver was taken to the hospital and it could be several hours before the turnpike reopens.
