FAIR HAVEN, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont highway has been renamed to commemorate the 1991 American-led war in the Persian Gulf.
Last weekend veterans and others held a ceremony to rename Vermont Route 22-A from Fair Haven to Vergennes the Desert Storm Veterans Memorial Highway.
Operation Desert Storm was carried out in early 1991 when U.S. and coalition forces retook Kuwait after the tiny country had been invaded by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. More than 600,000 Americans served in the conflict.
Desert Storm veteran Vito Demarco tells mychamplainvalley.com (https://bit.ly/2q6NpkJ ) it was a short war, but that doesn’t mean anything less for the people who were involved.
The idea of dedicating the highway to Desert Storm came from Vermont’s past state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Stephen Leach, who petitioned the state a year ago.
