PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing a woman and stealing pain pills.

The Panama City News Herald (https://goo.gl/wzTVVj) reports that 50-year-old Robert Wayne Vaughan Jr. was sentenced on Thursday after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and robbery.

Authorities say Vaughan had been trying to buy pills from 68-year-old Patricia Pedraza at her Panama City home in February 2016 when the two got into an argument over money. Vaughan called Pedraza a derogatory name, and she struck him.

Vaughan said the strike triggered a flashback to a 1997 assault, prompting him to stab Pedraza about 20 times. Instead of calling for help, Vaughan stole pain pills and fled.
