NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A 28-year-old woman charged in the deaths of her two children has a new trial date.

News outlets report Judge Robin Pittman set Aug. 7 as the start of the capital murder trial of Chelsea Thornton. It’s the fifth trial date set since her arrest in 2012.

New Orleans police say Thornton confessed to fatally shooting her 3-year-old son Kendall Adams and drowning her 4-year-old daughter Kelsey Adams in the bathtub as mercy killings. She has entered dual pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.

Mental health evaluations have stalled court proceedings, but state prosecutor Tiffany Tucker says a report is expected soon.

District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office says the death penalty is on the table if Thornton is found guilty of murder.
