PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence city councilman facing embezzlement charges has been recalled by his constituents.

Voters decided 1,772-158 to recall Democrat Kevin Jackson in a special election Tuesday.

Jackson was indicted in July on charges he embezzled more than $125,000 from the Providence Cobras youth track and field team. He has denied the charges.

WPRI-TV reports that he’s the first politician in city history to be recalled.

The results are unofficial and must be certified by an elections board later this month. An election to replace Jackson will be scheduled for 90 days after the seat is formally declared vacant.

Jackson has represented a portion of the city’s East Side since 1995. More than 2,300 voters in Jackson’s neighborhood signed a recall petition.
