ROYALTON, Vt. (AP) - About 150 residents in Royalton, Vermont, have signed a petition for a revote on a plan to consolidate the school district with nearby Bethel and Rochester.

Valley News (https://bit.ly/2pY2qVs ) reports the measure previously failed in Royalton on a 460-203 vote.

If approved, a revote creates a new school district operating under a single budget with a single school board. If the revote fails, the state Board of Education can plan for the district to be in compliance with a 2015 school consolidation law that requires districts to meet standards such as equity, accountability and cost.

An active Facebook group of residents shows there is still opposition to the merger. However, an organizer behind the revote effort says the merger takes advantage of financial incentives offered under the school consolidation law.
