HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey city is seeking to force seven police officers involved in shootings or fatal accidents to take an early retirement.

The Hackensack City Council has applied for involuntary disability retirement for the officers, claiming they are all unable to perform their duties. NorthJersey.com (https://njersy.co/2rmDOp0 ) reports six of the seven applications had been approved as of Tuesday, with one tabled for further discussion.

At a Tuesday council meeting, residents and police officers showed up to comment on the decision, including one of the officers affected by the decision, Elvin Hernandez. He told the council they should be ashamed in making him retire.

Upon receipt, a board of trustees for the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System must approve the applications. If the trustees approve, officers cannot cancel their retirement.
