DENVER (AP) - A suburban Denver man has pleaded guilty to shooting a doctor to death and wounding two women, including his wife.

The Denver Post reports https://goo.gl/JuwsqN 46-year-old Kevin Lyons pleaded guilty Thursday to 16 counts, including first-degree murder, stemming from the April 2016 shooting that killed Dr. Kenneth Atkinson. Lyons avoided a possible death sentence as part of a plea deal and will spend life in prison without parole.

Prosecutors say he opened fire in his Centennial neighborhood, killing Atkinson as the physician ran out of his home to help two wounded women, including Lyons’ wife. Lyons’ attorneys had said they would introduce evidence that their client suffers from a mental health condition.

His wife told investigators he had been acting “weird” and saying “crazy stuff” for days before the shootings.
