TREMONT, Ill. (AP) - Mother’s Day is coming and a museum in central Illinois is giving visitors a chance to see what kind of hats moms have been wearing for more than 150 years.

The (Peoria) Journal Star (https://bit.ly/2ph4gNe ) reports the Tremont Historical Museum will have some 40 vintage hats on display the next time it’s open on May 13 and May 14. Most are for women but there are a few worn by children and men.

The hats offer a glimpse changing fashions and changing social attitudes. For example, there’s a hat from about the time of the Civil War that has a long flap at the back that served as both as protection from the sun and the whispers of those who might be offended by the sight of a lady’s neck.
