PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia police say an officer accused of punching his wife was chasing her in his patrol car, siren blaring, when she crashed.

Police say Officer Antonio Mayhew has been suspended with the intent to dismiss and is facing numerous criminal charges.

Investigators say Mayhew was on-duty Tuesday when he left his assigned area and confronted his wife. They say he punched her as she sat in her car and chased her, with lights and sirens active, when she drove off. She crashed into another car, injuring the other driver.

Commissioner Richard Ross said the confrontation and chase were captured on surveillance video.

He told Philly.com it was “one of the most irresponsible and outlandish things” he’d ever heard of an officer doing.

Mayhew did not respond to a request for comment.
