HENRICO, Va. (AP) - Henrico County police are investigating the deaths two pedestrians who were struck and killed by a police vehicle early Saturday.

Authorities said an on-duty county officer was driving a marked cruiser westbound on Williamsburg Road shortly after 2 a.m. when his vehicle hit a man and woman near the intersection of Aspen Shades Parkway. Both adults died at the scene.

Lieutenant C. L. Garrett, a spokesman for county police, said the officer did not have his lights and siren activated at the time was not responding to a call.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrians were walking eastbound in the westbound lane of Williamsburg Road when they were struck, authorities said. Both were wearing dark clothing and the roadway was not illuminated.

The victims were identified as 37-year-old James Alan Joyce Jr. and 36-year-old Mary Oakes Babcock, both from New Kent County.

The police officer, whose name was not released, was not injured. He has been placed on administrative status.

Investigators said they are looking for another vehicle believed to be involved in the crash and are urging anyone with information to contact them.
