HAVRE, Mont. (AP) - National monuments under review for possible rescission under President Donald Trump’s administration include Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana.

The national monument covers almost 600 square miles along the Missouri River in north-central Montana. President Bill Clinton designated the national monument in 2001.

The Interior Department is opening a public comment period for the nationwide review.

The Havre Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2pQiJ3q) the Missouri Breaks monument was controversial from the start, as was a federal Wild and Scenic River designation in the same area in the 1970s.

Some local landowners and others criticized the designation as presidential overreach.
