LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A former Lexington councilwoman has pleaded not guilty to five felony charges related to her former position as the general manager of a Lexington hotel.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports (https://bit.ly/2qgNIJd ) that 34-year-old Sasha Love Higgins pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of identity theft, forgery and three counts of theft by deception. Higgins is accused of issuing and cashing payroll checks in the name of a former Hampton Inn employee. The gross amount of the seven checks was $5,709.88, which became $4,226.33 after taxes. Higgins’ attorney Fred Peters says the money was used to pay contract employees and there was no intent to deprive anyone.

Higgins was elected in November and resigned April 27, the day after the indictment was released. Mayor Jim Gray will name her replacement.
