DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - An engineer at North Carolina Central University has died in a fire at his home.

Firefighters were called to the Durham home around 11:15 p.m. Sunday.

Local media outlets reported firefighters were initially unable to get into the home because of the heavy flames.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control around midnight, and authorities said they found the body of 52-year-old William Michael Logan in a second-floor bathroom. A woman who met firefighters when they arrived said she thought Logan was behind her as she fled the home.

Logan worked as a construction engineer in Facilities Management at N.C. Central. Interim Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye said Logan had worked in the UNC system since 1989.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, focusing on the deck of the home.
