MESA, Ariz. (AP) - An Arizona city’s councilman has been arrested on suspicion of driving drunk.

The Arizona Republic reports (https://bit.ly/2psq8Eh ) Mesa Councilman Ryan Winkle had been arrested Sunday after he approached three pedestrians at a crosswalk at a fast rate of speed before stopping. The police report states the pedestrians jumped out of the way thinking they might be hit.

The police officer followed the vehicle and noticed it swerving, nearly hitting the curb.

Winkle denied being drunk upon the officer pulling him over.

The police report states the officer had been able to smell alcohol in the car and Winkle’s eyes were red and his speech slurred.

His wife had been in the car with him.

A second officer administered three field sobriety tests to Winkle, during which he exhibited “poor performance.”

He had declined to take a breath test.
