JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Officials say motorists can expect 20-minute delays on the Newport Pell Bridge as deck repair work begins.

Crews will remove and then pour new concrete on the bridge for the $8 million project.

Travel will be restricted to one lane in each direction from May to June, with the exception of Memorial Day weekend. Travel restrictions will pause for July and August, and then return from September to the end of the year.

Vehicles wider than eight feet or weighing more than 80,000 pounds will not be allowed on the bridge.

Officials say the repairs are necessary to extend the life of the bridge. The restoration project is expected to last up to eight years.
