NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty police officer returned fire and wounded a suspect during an attempted robbery in New Jersey’s largest city.

Authorities say the officer was confronted by two males on Wainwright Street in Newark early Tuesday. When he identified himself as a police officer, authorities say one of the suspects opened fire.

The officer shot one of the suspects, who was taken to a hospital. The second suspect fled.

The officer was not injured.
