COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a distracted driver struck a parked vehicle and three people, killing a woman.
Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton told news outlets that 62-year-old Rebecca Hastie was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday. Two other people were struck, but only one was treated at a hospital.
Officials say an unoccupied Dodge Dakota was parked on the outside lane of an avenue. Hastie, a 47-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were standing around an injured dog in the lane when they were struck by a 38-year-old man.
Authorities say the crash caused his vehicle to strike the Dodge’s bumper, sending it into a drainage ditch on the side of the road.
He told police that he didn’t see the pedestrians until after the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
