WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington police are investigating a wreck that claimed the life of an elderly woman.

Police say the crash occurred Friday afternoon when a 77-year-old woman was speeding while driving on 7th Street and struck several cement barriers at a three-way intersection. Police say the car overturned on its roof and despite lifesaving efforts from New Castle County paramedics the woman was pronounce dead on the scene.

Police say witnesses told them the driver seemed to be having a medical emergency prior to getting into her car. Police say it’s unclear whether her death was caused by the accident or a medical condition. She has not been publicly identified.

The incident is still under investigation.
