DELAFIELD, Wis. (AP) - When St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy opens its next summer session, it will have something absent from the school for nearly 130 years - female cadets.

Currently 218 boys in grades 7 to 12 are enrolled at the Delafield school. The academy’s board of trustees said it considered societal and cultural changes and the role women have in business, education and the military in deciding to enroll female students as part of the school’s evolution.

The Journal Sentinel reports President Jack Albert says enrollment was also a factor. It has remained flat over the last four years. When the academy first opened in 1884, it began as a day school for boys and girls. It became a boys-only school four years later.
