LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer who was charged in the death of a man who died in police custody is no longer on the force.

KLAS-TV reports Kenneth Lopera, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter and oppression under color of office in the death of Tashii Brown, has retired.

Brown died after being placed in an unauthorized chokehold by Lopera on May 14, 2017.

Lopera’s arrest report says the officer struck Brown in the head 10 to 12 times and held Brown in the chokehold 45 seconds after another officer asked him to release Brown. Lopera also discharged a Taser into Brown’s body without giving Brown opportunity to comply with commands.

Lopera has filed a suit against the Metro Police Department stating, “LVMPD disguises administrative investigations as criminal investigations.”
