SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 20 years for shooting a police officer in the arm as he executed a search warrant.

Solicitor Barry Barnette announced Monday that 40-year-old Dennis Ray Alexander pleaded guilty to attempted murder, gun possession by a convicted felon and distribution of crack cocaine.

Prosecutors say Alexander shot Woodruff police Sgt. Darrell Dawkins on March 14, 2016, as he and other officers forced open the front door to search the home. Dawkins was the first officer inside. Police bought $20 worth of crack at the home days earlier as part of an undercover operation.

Police say Alexander surrendered immediately after shooting Alexander.

Barnette says Alexander’s criminal history includes convictions for domestic violence and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
