ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - UNC Asheville Provost Joe Urgo has been appointed the school’s interim chancellor.

The school announced on its website that UNC President Margaret Spellings announced the appointment on Thursday. Spellings also approved the appointment of the members of UNC Asheville’s chancellor search committee.

Urgo joined UNC Asheville as interim provost in July 2014 and was appointed as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in April 2015. Before coming to UNCA, Urgo had served as president of St. Mary’s College of Maryland from 2010 to 2013.

Grant, who was appointed as UNC Asheville’s seventh chancellor in August 2014, announced last month that she would leave the school to take over as president of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate, a nonprofit educational institution and specialty museum in Boston.
