ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) - A 26-year-old from suburban Chicago has pleaded guilty in connection with an accident that killed 9-year-old Katie Jonak as she returned to her Aurora home from a play rehearsal last year.
Prosecutors say Anthony S. Potochney’s (poe-TOCH’-neez) car was going 85 mph in Aurora one year ago when it veered into the wrong lane and struck a minivan driven by Jonak’s mother. Two other children were injured. Potochney fled the scene but was arrested soon after.
The Kane County state’s attorney’s office says the Aurora man pleaded guilty Friday to three counts of aggravated DUI and failure to stop after an accident involving injury or death. He faces up to 14 years in prison. He’ll remain in jail as he awaits sentencing on Jan. 16.
