During the 2016-election campaign, candidate Trump promised voters that one of his top priorities as president would be to repeal the 2015 Obama nuclear Iran deal. According to him, the deal is one of the worst and most one-sided transactions America has ever made.

Now that one-sided deal, which our former president made at all costs, is being used by the ayatollahs in Iran to build and cover up their country’s continuing nuclear-weapons and ballistic-missile-development programs. The ayatollahs get help from North Korea, Russia and Red China, and are able to acquire valuable resources from other transaction-negotiating partners.

The nuclear-deal’s two annexes, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and a statement of implementation, were written by Iran with Russian and China’s supervision and wording. It thus follows that the ayatollahs have no desire to renegotiate any part of the agreement.

The U.N. secretary general has said that Iran is lying and violating the provision to forgo developing ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons. Yet the deal’s language allows Iran to claim that its missiles are not designed to carry nuclear weapons. And at any rate, Iranian scientists are in North Korea beyond the International Atomic Energy Agency’s limited ability to detect their actions.

Failure to act on Iran now worsens the global proliferation threat. The deal is not a good one by any means and should be decertified.
