BARRE, Vt. (AP) - Officials in the Vermont city of Barre hope to lift a boil-water notice Friday.

The Times Argus reports the notice was put in place after a fire hydrant blew its top on Wednesday. Barre officials issued a notice to residents in high elevation areas in the city on Thursday saying there was a strong possibility that their drinking water “may become contaminated on the way to the tap.”

Assistant Public Works director Steve Micheli says pressure caused the fire hydrant top to blow off. Workers have shut off and capped the hydrant.

City manager Steve Mackenzie says water samples were taken Wednesday afternoon. Mackenzie hopes acceptable test results will allow the city to life the boil water notice Friday afternoon.
