The Houston Astros acquired former American League Cy Young winner Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers late Thursday in a move gearing up for the postseason.

The Astros, who have the best record in the AL at 80-53, sent three minor league prospects to the Tigers for Verlander.

Verlander gives the Astros another starting pitcher for their playoff rotation. Teams had until Friday to add players that are eligible for the playoffs. The deal was made minutes before the deadline.

Verlander, 34, is 10-8 this season with a 3.82 ERA. Since the All-Star break, however, he has a 2.41 ERA.

The Tigers acquired pitcher Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers.
