NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - A former drug treatment counselor who demanded $1,500 from a client in return for writing favorable progress reports despite a failed drug test will not have to serve a prison term.

Middlesex County prosecutors say Anthony Trimble was sentenced Monday to three years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution. He had pleaded guilty in May to theft by unlawful taking.

The 54-year-old Howell Township man was working as a part-time counselor at a privately owned clinic in Perth Amboy when he took the money last December. Prosecutors started investigating him after the client’s lawyer reported the payment to police.

Trimble was fired from the clinic after he was charged.
