CORCORAN, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a maximum-security prisoner stabbed and killed another inmate in a state-prison yard in California’s Central Valley.

Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials say 35-year-old Jonathan Lewis killed 28-year-old Dennis Cruz in the yard at California State Prison-Corcoran.

Prison officials say Lewis chased down Cruz and the two fought. They say Lewis then pulled out a makeshift weapon and stabbed Cruz.

Guards used pepper spray to stop the attack and tried to revive Cruz, but he died soon after in the prison’s medical center.

Lewis is serving a 16-year sentence from San Diego County for assault, and a four-year sentence from Kings County for another jail attack.

Cruz was serving a six-year sentence from Los Angeles Count for robbery and another six-year sentence from Riverside County for carjacking.
