PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple University police are investigating after African-American students found a banana on their dorm room’s door handle.

A spokesman at the Philadelphia college says the banana was found Monday and authorities are trying to determine if the incident was racially motivated.

A woman who says she goes to Temple posted a picture of the banana on Twitter, along with a caption that said she and her roommates are the only black women on that floor. The school’s student government condemned the incident.

The college says roughly 12 percent of its students are African-American.

A similar incident occurred this year at American University in Washington, D.C., where bananas hanging by nooses were found around the campus after a black woman became the college’s first African-American student body president.
