ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Two sisters convicted of embezzling from the Native Village of Savoonga have been ordered to pay restitution.

Federal prosecutor Bryan Schroder says 60-year-old Sylvia Toolie was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in federal prison and ordered to repay $69,563 to the tribe.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess sentenced 57-year-old Peggy Akeya to five years’ probation, three months home confinement and 120 hours of community service. She was ordered to repay $14,855.

Burgess also ordered Akeya to record a public service announcement to raise awareness of the consequences of embezzlement.

Toolie and Akeya held positions with Kawerak Inc., a regional nonprofit that provides services to tribes.

Schroder says they embezzled money, among other funds, intended for repair of Savoonga homes and buildings damaged during a severe December 2010 winter storm.
