BURLINGTON CITY, N.J. (AP) - A gunman who admitted firing several shots into a crowd on a street last year, killing an innocent bystander and injuring a 5-year-old girl, is now headed to state prison.
Burlington County prosecutors say Samuel James received a 30-year term and will not be eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday.
The 27-year-old Burlington City man had pleaded guilty in June to murder charges stemming from the August 2016 death of 24-year-old Byron Turner, who was struck in the head and died a short time later. James has said Turner was not the intended target of the shooting.
Authorities say a 5-year-old girl who was in the area where the shooting occurred was injured while retreating from the gunfire but wasn’t shot. She was treated for undisclosed injuries.
