SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The death of a South Carolina man during a police chase earlier this year has been ruled a homicide.

News outlets report Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers announced his ruling in 30-year-old Robert Lee Clark Jr.’s April 19 death Thursday, saying Clark died in a motorcycle crash as a result of Berkley County sheriff’s deputy James Vansant’s pursuit.

Brouthers highlighted that his role was only to determine the manner of death.

A Dorchester County grand jury declined to indict Vansant on Aug. 31. Dan Sorenson with the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office says the coroner’s ruling doesn’t have bearing on the case.

Vansant and the sheriff’s office have maintained the collision wasn’t deliberate.

Vansant remains on administrative leave pending the results of an ongoing internal investigation.
