MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - President Donald Trump has nominated a Burlington attorney to become the top law enforcement official in the state.

Christina Nolan would become the 38th U.S. attorney for Vermont if her nomination is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. She has served as assistant U.S. attorney in Vermont since 2010.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy and Republican Vermont Gov. Phil Scott recommended her to the president.

Leahy and Scott said Friday that Nolan is a tough and well-respected prosecutor who is uniquely familiar with the challenges of Vermont’s opioid crisis. They say they were both impressed by her passion for the state and for the mission of a prosecutor - to seek justice and improve communities - in addition to her thoughtfulness and leadership.
