JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A man accused of strangling his mother last year inside their apartment will remain in custody until his trial.

A judge issued the ruling Monday during a detention hearing for 49-year-old Michael Metro. The judge found no conditions of supervised release that would ensure Metro would appear for his court hearings or not pose a danger to the public.

Hudson County prosecutors had sought to keep Metro detained, citing the “extreme violence” that led to the death of 69-year-old Kathleen Metro. Her body was found on New Year’s Eve in her apartment at a Bayonne public housing complex, shortly after her son was found in the complex’s courtyard with upper body injuries.

Defense attorney Chris Orriss told The Jersey Journal that he expects to present an insanity defense.
