JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi State Department of Health has earned accreditation from a national group.

The department announced Monday that it received the recognition from the Public Health Accreditation Board. A department news release says accreditation means the agency “meets or exceeds national standards of public health practices and performance.”

Workers from the board spent nine months reviewing documents that show the department’s processes and procedures. They looked at disease investigation, chronic disease prevention, quality improvement planning, public information and community collaboration.

Dr. Mary Currier, the Mississippi health officer, says the accreditation process makes the Health Department more effective.
