GEORGIA, Vt. (AP) - An early morning tire fire at a Vermont scrapyard sent plumes of foul-smelling smoke into the air and left a challenge for firefighters.

Georgia Fire Chief Jamie Cota says tire fires are extremely hard to put out, and responders had to wear respirators to filter out the thick and toxic smoke. The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/2wnegaV ) firefighters responded to the blaze around 4:15 a.m. Thursday.

Town Administrator Michael McCarthy says it was a “large, smoky, smelly fire.” No injuries were reported and nearby residents were not evacuated. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

McCarthy says a local grocer donated food and water to firefighters at the scene.
