DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A police department in Alabama is giving away hundreds of gun locks to prevent mishandling of firearms.

News outlets report the Decatur Police Department is distributing 300 gun locks to its residents. The locks were provided by Project Childsafe, which is the largest firearm safety education program in the nation.

The program says the most proactive way to prevent gun-related injuries and fatalities is through proper firearm storage. The storage devices come with a padlock and are secured by a cable that passes through the barrel, chamber and magazine.

City spokeswoman Emme Long says residents can pick up the locks at the police department’s front desk or at any police department-sponsored events.
