ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A New York state lawmaker who emigrated from Greece and worked to revitalize struggling parts of the Hudson Valley has died.

Democratic Assemblyman Frank Skartados (skar-TAY’-dohs) died early Sunday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The 62-year-old was first elected to the Legislature in 2008 and represented areas of the Hudson Valley including Newburgh and parts of Poughkeepsie.

Skartados arrived in the U.S. at age 14 and worked in restaurants to put himself through college. He was a teacher and farm owner who renovated properties in downtown Poughkeepsie.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie of the Bronx called Skartados a “devoted public servant” and said he embodied “the qualities that make New York a great place to call home.”

His replacement will be selected in November if no special election is called.
