PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A detective in the Providence Police Department’s intelligence unit has been charged with assault.

WJAR-TV reports John Black was arrested for domestic assault following a fight with his girlfriend Monday night.

Police responded to a call about a disturbance at an apartment on Atwells Avenue and found a woman with an undisclosed injury and Black with a swollen black eye.

According to the unidentified victim, Black assaulted her when she refused him entry to her apartment, and alleged he took her cell phone away when she tried to dial 911.

He was arraigned Tuesday morning, and released on recognizance.

Black must appear in court in May. An attorney for Black has not been identified. There is no word on his employment status at the police department.
