OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Police say an Omaha man fatally shot a dog that had latched onto one of his neighbor’s hands and wouldn’t let go.

Fifty-nine-year-old Patricia Garber told officers that she was trying to get her son’s 2-year-old pit bull. Crucifix, into the house when he clamped down on her right hand Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbor Dave Kovar told the Omaha World-Herald that he heard Garber’s cries for help. He says Garber had been waving a stick to get the dog inside but didn’t strike him.

Kovar couldn’t make the dog let go, so he went into his house, called 911 and returned with his .22-caliber handgun.

Kovar says Garber yelled for Kovar to shoot the dog, so he fired one round into the dog’s head. He says he “couldn’t stand by and watch the dog maul her.”

Garber was hospitalized.
