LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - A former Mississippi jail nurse convicted in a diabetic inmate’s death has been granted bond while she appeals the verdict.
News outlets report former George County jail nurse Carmon Sue Brannan was granted the $200,000 bond by a special judge Thursday. Brannan was convicted of manslaughter in William Joel Dixon’s death and sentenced to 15 years in prison. She remains in custody.
Dixon went a week without insulin before he died in 2014. Prosecutors say Brannon denied him treatment.
Defense attorneys say in a motion filed last week the charge against her cannot be proved because prosecutors called it misdemeanor manslaughter and likely confused jurors. They say manslaughter is a felony and cannot be tried as a lesser offense.
District Attorney Tony Lawrence says the defense didn’t question the indictment until now.
