The federal judge overseeing the Paul Manafort criminal trial said he is “optimistic” a verdict would come Friday as jurors start their second day of deliberation.

Judge T.S. Ellis III made the comment Friday in open court to prosecutors and Mr. Manafort’s legal team.

Mr. Manafort is charged with 18 counts of tax and bank fraud, but all of the purported crimes occurred before he became chairman of President Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Jurors on Thursday had asked the judge four questions, including one about reasonable doubt, a sign this case won’t be a slam dunk for prosecutors from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team.
