ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Ron Dellums was a family man, but it seemed that his family included just about everyone, regardless of race, religion or species (“California’s fiery former congressman Ron Dellums dies at 82,” Web, July 30). A former Marine and a member of Congress for 13 terms, to animals and their advocates, he was a hero.

While chair of the House Armed Services Committee, Mr. Dellums directed the Government Accounting Office to conduct a review of every military experiment involving animals, and pushed the military to promote non-animal testing. Although much has changed for the better, we carry on that work today. We remembered him last year when the U.S. Coast Guard switched from animals to simulators and declared an end to harming and killing goats and pigs in training exercises.

Perhaps this quote sums up Dellums best: “[I]f it’s radical to oppose racism and sexism and all other forms of oppression then I’m proud to be called a radical.” Dellums was a person of integrity, honor and vision. He will be missed.
