PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Officials are warning that ground-level ozone concentrations along the Maine coast will soon reach dangerous levels, which will make for a bad combination with continued high heat and humidity.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection issued an air quality alert on Monday that predicted ozone levels would exceed the standard considered healthy for sensitive groups. That includes people with respiratory diseases and healthy people who exert themselves.

The Portland Press Herald reports the ozone concentrations will reach high enough levels to threaten healthy children and adults on Tuesday.

The air quality alert is the fourth issued by the state DEP this year. Two previous days exceeded healthy levels in May and July. The state had six days in which ozone exceeded healthy levels in 2017.
